IN MY OPINION Clio represents a) how well you do in history, b) where your interests run deep, c) where your views are controversial and may catch a lot of attention from others, and/or d) political stances. Out of this union came a son, Hyacinth, who would become a Greek hero and a future lover to Apollo. Aphrodite in turn got revenge (as she typically does) she made Clio fall in love with an older king (likely Pierus but there are some contradictory sources that say differently). Her name is derived from the same Greek root word that means to celebrate, to recount, or to make famous. She would proclaim them and recount the history of the heroes. She was considered the celebrator of history, of astonishing deeds and incredible accomplishments. Clio thought that Aphrodite’s affair with Adonis was wrong - so Clio essentially ridiculed Aphrodite for her affair with Adonis. Her symbols include the scroll, books, or tablets.
The first myth I wrote about was Adonis and I had a similar reaction as Clio did. She was the personification of history but in some accounts she was also known as the muse of lyre playing. While there are very few stories about this minor goddess and muse, there is a tidbit regarding her proclamations. Clio, in particular, is the muse of history thus she is often depicted with scrolls or books at her side. Clio's name comes from the Greek word kleô which translates to "to proclaim" which fits her inspiration.
All muses are thought to be the children of Zeus and the titan Mnemosyne - he allegedly laid with the titan for nine nights, hence nine muses. The muses are considered lesser goddesses who serve as inspirations in the arts and sciences - they are also considered the source of all knowledge. Clio is one of the nine muses, or mousai, of Olympus.
